How to Fix a Leaking Radiator

A radiator can leak quite soon after installing for a number of reasons. It could be that air is being drawn into the system or the debris hasn’t been cleaned away thoroughly during the installation process.

One way to fix a leaky radiator would be to remove it from the wall and flush it out.

To do this you will need to:-

Turn off the central heating

Make sure you give enough time for the water to cool down.

Remove the valves from the bottom of either side of the radiator.

Empty the water into a container and then down the toilet bowl.

Flush the radiator and apply some non-acidic cleaning fluid into it. You should be able to purchase this from most DIY stores.

Attach the radiator back on, and that should fix the leak.

It could be that the gland nut on the spindle of the valve just needs tightening a little (clockwise). Or the whole valve may need to be replaced. If you are inexperienced when it comes to plumbing we suggest you give a professional company a call.

Fix it with PTFE Tape

Another way to fix a leak in your radiator would be to repack the valve. To do this you need to unscrew the top of the valve with a Phillips screwdriver.  Then tear off a piece PTFE tape. You can buy this in most DIY stores. Wrap the PTFE tape around the thread on the connections. Then replace the nut.

This method will take a bit of trial and error, especially for the novice. If the radiator is still leaking after you have done this, start the process again and add some more tape. Don’t tighten the nut too tight when replacing the valve otherwise the tape will make it too tight to turn.
